Damage control: The height of the bund to the canal which was dug up to divert the floodwater is being increased at the Visakhapatnam airport on Friday. VISAKHAPATNAM: Heavy rain since Thursday due to a trough of low pressure over Bay of Bengal near Visakhapatnam resulted in the death of five persons, including two children, while more than 6,500 houses were damaged in the district, according to district officials on Friday. The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation area was the worst hit as all the deaths were reported from here. People had to wade through knee-level water which entered houses in Gnanapuram, Sebastian Colony and other low-lying areas. Educational institutions were closed for the day. Three members of a family were killed in Musalayyapalem in Sagar Nagar in the city outskirts when the retaining wall fell on their thatched house. The dead were identified as Pukkala Santoshi (30), wife of Govind, and her children Anusha (10) and Aruna Kumar (8). Singuru Anita (26), wife of Raju of B.C. Colony, in Vepagunta was killed when the retaining wall collapsed on her hut. It was also reported that Seeka Ramulamma (46) of Dayananda Nagar in the city died when a wall adjacent to her house collapsed. But it was yet to be verified whether she died in the accident or due to an illness, said District Revenue Officer S. Satyanarayana. Visakhapatnam rural area received 26.2 cm of rain and rural area 18.8 cm since Thursday. Elamanchili (11.5 cm), Atchutapuram (11), Butchayyapeta (11.6), Chodavaram (15.2), K. Kotapadu (13) were among the mandals that received heavy rainfall. The number of houses damaged in the district was 6,508. Overflowing tankThere was a report of the Lakshmipuram tank near Chodavaram overflowing, while the road near Bijapuram in Madugula mandal and Gadirayi-M. Krishnapuram road has been breached. Crops were in water but damage to them was not feared by the farmers as the water was expected to recede quickly.
