APPEAL: Collector T.N. Venkatesh (centre) being briefed on oil palm cultivation in Kulithalai. KULITHALAI: There is huge potential to cultivate oil palm in the district. Farmers should be sensitised to venture into the economically advantageous activity, Collector T.N. Venkatesh said here recently. Addressing a training workshop on oil palm cultivation, organised here by the Department of Agriculture, Mr. Venkatesh said there was scope to raise oil palm in over 1,000 hectares. The current year’s target was a meagre 20 hectares. Farmers should utilise the numerous subsidies extended to those cultivating oil palm. During the first year, Rs.7,000 a hectare was being given as subsidy for ploughing, while Rs.2,450, Rs.2,800 and Rs.3,250 were being extended as maintenance subsidy over the next three years, Mr. Venkatesh said. Farmers could also utilise the subsidy extended by the Central and State Governments for establishing micro irrigation management techniques. The subsidy ranged between Rs.5,200 to Rs.7,400 a hectare. Members of farmers’ discussion groups, progressive farmers and others could take the lead in taking to oil palm cultivation as marketability had increased over the years. Successful farmers could enlighten others in their area on the advantages of oil palm cultivation over other conventional crops, he said. Joint Director of Agriculture K. Rangasamy, Assistant Director, Kulithalai, N. Shanmugam, progressive farmers Mahadanapuram V. Rajaram, Kulithalai A.V. Gopaladesikan, and farmers discussion group members were among those who participated in the workshop. Agricultural expert Tugili C. Subramanian organised the workshop as the resource person.
