TIRUCHI: Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) would soon launch broadband multi-play service in 39 exchanges in Tiruchi Secondary Switching Area (SSA), Principal General Manager A. Balraj said here on Friday. Internet protocol television (IPTV), video on demand and high speed data connectivity are some of the services that will be available under multi-play. Broadband connections will also be provided. Necessary equipment has been installed in 29 exchanges and the system was undergoing trials in Thillai Nagar I and II exchanges in the City. The service will be initially introduced in the urban centres of Tiruchi, Karur, Pudukottai and Perambalur districts. BSNL would offer the service in 66 exchanges in the SSA, Mr. Balraj told a press conference. Currently, BSNL offers broadband service in 56 exchanges and the service will soon be extended to Jayamkondam and Thalavai. BSNL has also introduced Internet Connect Cards for broadband access. Sale and hire The ICC cards would be available for sale and on hire as well. Unlimited broadband usage, at a fixed monthly charge of Rs.250, and mobility for use in laptop computers would be the main attractions of the cards. BSNL’s Tamil Nadu Circle has launched a customer care portal for handling online requests and complaints. Customers can register requests for landline, mobile, leased line, ISDN, broadband and wireless-in-local loop (WLL) new connections besides requests for shifting, change in tariff plans and add-on facilities. Duplicate bill requests, complaints and faults can also be registered online through the portal which can be accessed through www.tamilnadu.bsnl.co.in, its website. Conceding that surrenders of landlines continued with about 1,000 lines being surrendered on an average a month, Mr. Balraj, however, said that WLL connections have increased to 47,049. BSNL will soon augment its capacity for cellular services by adding 171 base tower stations, most of which will be in rural areas. Another 40 base tower stations will be added under the Universal Service Obligation programme funded by the Union Government, for which the equipment is expected by January. Twenty seven base tower stations will be added to expand WLL capacity. The telephone directory for the SSA would be released shortly,
