Co-accused gets five-year RI

He was convicted on four counts
Judge also imposes fine

CHENNAI: A Special Court here has convicted Sarfraz Nawaz, a co-accused in the multi-crore fake stamp paper case involving Abdul Karim Telgi, and sentenced him to five-year rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs.3 lakh.

Sarfraz Nawaz, who pleaded guilty, was convicted on four counts and given varying degrees of sentences and fine by IX Additional Sessions Judge and Special Judge for CBI Cases, N. Velu, on Friday.

While he was sentenced to undergo one-year imprisonment for criminal conspiracy, the charges under Section 258 (sale of counterfeit government stamp) and Section 259 (possession of counterfeit government stamp) attracted a sentence of two years and five years.

For the offence of cheating (Section 420), the court awarded him one-year rigorous imprisonment. All the sentences would run concurrently.

Sentence already served would be set off against the punishment.

Remand extended

Arrested in February 2003, Sarfraz Nawaz is housed in the Bangalore central prison. He was produced before the court on Friday through the video-conferencing system. The court also extended the remand of the other accused.
