LUCKNOW: The Congress on Friday threatened to launch an agitation if former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s bust is not re-installed at the centre of Rajiv Chowk here. A delegation led by the party’s State unit president Rita Bahuguna-Joshi visited the site and handed a memorandum to the Mayor of Lucknow, Dinesh Sharma, demanding immediate restoration of the bust. Renovation and expansion work near Chief Minister Mayawati’s official residence had resulted in Mr. Gandhi’s bust being moved to the edge of the park at the roundabout. Earlier the bust occupied the central place at the crossing. Addressing the party workers, the UPCC president warned the Government of an agitation if the bust is not re-installed at the centre within a week. Dr. Joshi said the former Prime Minister had been the leader of the entire country and not the Congress party alone and had been bestowed with the nation’s highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna, for his contribution to the country. She said the move to displace his bust had hurt the sentiments of the Congress workers. The Mayor assured the Congress delegation that he would ensure that Mr. Gandhi’s bust is re-installed at the centre.
