MADURAI: On the occasion of World Habitat Day, City Police Commissioner, K. Nandabalan, called for protecting and preserving the wonders of nature. Pointing to an increasing number of species that were becoming extinct, he said that nature should be safeguarded. He was delivering a lecture on the topic ‘A safe city is a just city’ at a meeting organised here by Institution of Engineers. Referring to an increasing crime rate faced by urban areas, he said that people should follow the maxim, ‘Prevention is better than cure,’ and take maximum care to ensure the safety of their property. Mr. Nandabalan also sought the cooperation of the public in maintaining law and order. “More than 2,000 cases have been booked with regard to helmets. Yet, compliance levels are low. The public must realise that when accidents happen, they will be the losers,” he said. He also urged the Institution of Engineers to play a role in creating awareness in the city and to make people gain civic sense. “Engineers can play a vital role in disaster management as they can don the role of crisis managers,” said Mr. Nandabalan. ‘Shelter for all’J. Manonmani, chairman of the local centre, said that the United Nations Human Settlements Programme had adopted the slogan ‘Shelter for all.’ This was to throw light on the state of habitations the world over and create awareness about basic human rights such as proper access to shelter, water and health.
