Guntur
High moment: Mayor Kanna Nagaraju waving at the inmates (not in picture) of the district jail from atop a hotel in Guntur on Friday. — GUNTUR: Minister for Transport Kanna Lakshmi Narayana on Friday showered praises on the Guntur Municipal Corporation for improving amenities in the city, but pointed out that it was nowhere close to a real corporation. “A lot needs to be done to improve the overall look of Guntur city to make it a corporation in the real sense,” the Minister told corporators and party sympathisers who attended a meeting to celebrate the completion of the Mayor’s two years in office. Major achievementA remarkable achievement of the GMC was to improve the drinking water supply facility and widening all four major approach roads into and out of the city by putting up dividers and central lighting system. Improvement in the financial status was one of the major achievements of the Congress-led council, which helped it take up some development works, Mr. Lakshmi Narayana said. Even after giving the city corporation status way back in 1995, successive TDP regimes in the GMC had not bothered to develop the city or improve its resources, he opined. MLC Rayapati Srinivas appreciated the council for improving the financial status and gave a call to Congress corporators and leaders to work with unity for development. In his brief speech, he stressed upon unity among party corporators in taking forward the development agenda. Another MLC from the Teachers’ Constituency K.S. Lakshmana Rao, while appreciating the work of the council headed by Mr. Kanna Nagaraju, wanted implementation of the underground drainage system throughout the city. Water supply timings were the worst and they should be streamlined at the earliest, he opined. Guntur-I MLA Sheik Subhani and father of Deputy Mayor in waiting Sheik Ghouse were also present. The only person conspicuous by his absence was Deputy Mayor Tadisetty Murali Mohan and brother of Guntur-II MLA Tadisetty Venkata Rao.
