Trained dogs attached to police kennels participate in a 15-day refresher course, says S. Vijay Kumar Be it any major offence, they are always with the police at the crime scene. To say that sniffer dogs play a key role in crime prevention and detection is no exaggeration, if their performance during anti-sabotage operations and crime investigation is any indication. On Thursday, it was a refreshing get-together of dogs on duty. Trained dogs attached to police kennels in the southern districts assembled in Madurai to participate in a 15-day refresher course. Inspector-General and Commissioner of Police, K. Nandabalan, inaugurated the programme in which the dogs will be put to test on their sniffing and detection skills. “Dogs have the capability to smell explosive substances that go undetected when screened with metal detectors. When explosives are concealed in many layers of polythene bags, there is a possibility that Explosive Vapour Detectors can fail. In such cases too, dogs are dependable,” a senior police official said adding that there were several instances when tdogs gave vital clues leading to detection of crimes. The dogs were subjected to health screening by a team led by K. Vairavasamy, Veterinary Surgeon, Department of Animal Husbandry, before they were put on the course. More kennelsAs there was an increasing demand for anti-sabotage checks, in the backdrop of VVIP visits and threat perceptions emanating from various extremist organisations, police officials said that the strength of kennels across the State was bound to increase in the near future. Following a directive from the Director General of Police, the refresher courses were being conducted for dogs in all the four police zones in the State. An expert from the Police Commando School, Chennai, was conducting the refresher course to the dogs in Madurai, police sources added.
