Dizzying heights: The construction site at Thoraipakkam where the accident took place on Friday. — TAMBARAM: A 30-year-old worker fell to death when an iron scaffolding at the construction site of a multi-storey building on Rajiv Gandhi Salai (formerly Old Mamallapuram Road), Thoraipakkam, collapsed on Friday morning. Thoraipakkam Police said work was in progress on an eight-storey Information Technology complex. The main builder – a leading player in the construction industry in association with a Singapore-based company – had given the contract of plastering the building to another private firm. K. Anandan of Arakkonam and four others — Marimuthu, Sarangapani, Ramesh and Munikrishnan — were engaged in the plastering work and had perched themselves dangerously on iron beams that formed part of the scaffolding. Anandan was high up the scaffolding when it collapsed around 7.30 a.m. All of them were injured and rushed to a private hospital in Perungudi. Anandan was pronounced dead on arrival. The police said they arrested three men on charges of carelessness and for failing to ensure basic precautionary measures for workers at the construction site. The police said they had investigated many cases of workers’ deaths in construction sites of IT facilities along Rajiv Gandhi Salai. While they recorded only fatal accidents, several other instances of workers getting grievously injured went unrecorded, they added. In April, four construction workers fell to death at the site of an IT complex in Sholinganallur. The same week, a worker came under the rubble of an IT park near Tambaram. In December last, a worker fell to death from a great height while working from a crane at the site of an IT complex in Sholinganallur.
