Road safety programme ends

Coimbatore: Safety Track, the month-long Rotary Road Safety Programme by the District Rotract Organisation concluded recently. The best performing Rotractors were presented awards by the District Collector, Neeraj Mittal.

Mr.Mittal said that monetary losses caused to the families of the accident victims could never be quantified especially in the event of the victim being a bread winner of the family. Accidents had claimed an average of 9,000 lives in the State in a year.

He added that focus needed to be on the three E’s of road safety – Engineering, Education and Enforcement. Towards betterment of these three E’s, the State Government had allocated Rs. 6 crore per annum for the district.

He lauded the participatory approach and supplementary efforts of the Rotractors to end road accidents. The District Rotract Representative, J. Satishkumar, said 72 clubs were involved in the programme.

During the programme, the Rotractors painted speed breakers, organised motor cycle rally to create awareness among the public, fixed first-aid boxes in public transport vehicles, distributed pamphlets, fixed bulls-eye on head lights, cleared traffic at important junctions, fixed reflective stickers on road signs, organised campaigns to ensure wearing of helmets and against use of cellular phones while driving/riding.
