TIRUPUR: Amid the struggle of garment exporters to sustain the growth because of the unrelenting ride of rupee against the US dollar and the knitwear hub experiencing negative growth, the India Knit Fair Association (IKFA) is organising the silver jubilee edition of India Knit Fair (Autumn/Winter/Mid-Summer Collection 2008) here between October 17 and 19. Union Commerce Secretary Gopal K. Pillai will inaugurate the fair. CrucialPresident of Tirupur Exporters’ Association and the IKFA, A. Sakthivel, told reporters that the fair was very crucial for the struggling exporters to reach out to new buyers and markets. The fair, according to him, assumes significance as the knitwear exporters are on the mode of aggressive marketing after a gap of several years and the industry needs more buyers and orders to sustain the turnover. All the 24 fairs held here so far had helped the industry in getting new buyers and producing new styles and designs based on the feedback of visitors. “In order to overcome the crisis now, we are trying our level best to cut the production cost and enhance productivity. But at the same time, we are also trying for new markets such as South America, South Africa, New Zealand, Australia and Japan,” Mr. Sakthivel said. He said the fair had emerged as one among the reputed knitwear trade fairs in the world. The best of the brand leaders, stores, wholesalers and importers had already identified Tirupur as one of the major sources for knitted garments. The IKF would showcase a wide range of product lines for men, women and children. Mr. Sakthivel said that finest collections from leading fashion designers, world-class manufacturers, international buyers and buying houses/agents would be on display in the fair. Celebrities from fashion world and representatives from all major knitwear organisations would participate. The range of products on display would include T-shirts, pullovers, cardigans, skirts, ensembles, Golfine Polo shirts, underwear, boxer shirts and sweat shirts. Mr. Sakthivel said that following the strengthening of Indian rupee against US dollar, Tirupur units had been experiencing a crisis. If the trend continued, more than 50,000 workers would lose their jobs by March. He wanted the Government to find remedies to alleviate the sufferings of the exporting community. Livelihood problemHe said that it was not a problem of just the businessmen, but a livelihood problem for thousands of workers and traders as the economy of the town depended on the knitwear exports. The IKFA president said that fashion shows would also be organised during the fair to display a range of products. A symposium of knitwear exports would be held on October 16 at the IKFA Convention Centre in which Union Minister of State for Textiles E.V.K.S. Elangovan would participate.
