Construction industry to go on strike from Oct. 8

Staff Reporter

TIRUPUR: Vexed over the spiralling prices of construction materials, the construction industry of Tirupur will be going on a week-long strike from October 8 urging the Central and State Governments to bring down the prices.

Tirupur Civil Engineers Association (TCEA), Tirupur Building Contractors Association, leading trade unions such as CITU, AITUC, LPF, INTUC, HMS and Anna Kattumana Sangam have jointly called for the strike.

Badly hit

K. Shanmugaraj, president of TCEA, told reporters here on Friday that the public and construction workers were badly hit by the ‘unjustifiable’ increase in the prices of construction materials.

Cement price had been increasing relentlessly as it was Rs. 160 a bag a year ago and the price touched Rs. 250 a bag now. Sand price rose to Rs. 7,000 for 2.75 units from Rs. 6,500 for 4.5 units a year ago. Steel price swelled to Rs. 34,000 a tonne from Rs. 24,000 a tonne a year ago.

Due to the artificial hike, the public, construction workers, electricians, plumbers, carpenters, painters, and traders had been badly affected. Civil engineers and contractors were also affected to a great extent.

The price hike was not curbed by the authorities despite representations from various bodies.

Mr. Shanmugaraj said that the members would stage a demonstration in front of Kumaran Square on Monday urging the Central and State Governments to intervene in the matter and take remedial steps soon.
