his story: Actor Kamal Haasan launching the autobiography of legendary actor Dev Anand in Chennai on Friday. CHENNAI: On a spring day in New York in 2003, when news of the United States’ invasion of Iraq began to break out, a legendary thespian of Hindi cinema was inspired to tell the story of his life. ‘Romancing With Life,’ the aptly named autobiography of eminent actor, producer and director Dev Anand — famous for playing the eternal romantic on screen — is not just an autobiography. It is a tribute to humanity and human values, Mr. Anand said here on Friday, speaking at the Chennai release of his book. “The book is a story about my life and times, but it also tells the story of my country and the fight for independence,” he said. The actor, who turned 84 on September 26, has acted, directed and produced movies since he made his cinematic debut in the 1946 film ‘Hum Ek Hain.’ His classics include ‘Baazi’ (1951), ‘Kala Pani’ (1958), ‘Hum Dono’ (1961) and ‘Guide’ (1965). “Dev Anand has delighted and entertained us with his socially relevant films,” said Udayan Mitra, senior managing director, Penguin India, the publishers of the book. “The book is a celebration of the spirit of romance that epitomised his attitude to life. I believe that it is one of the greatest ever autobiographies to be published in India.” N. Ram, Editor-in-Chief, The Hindu, said the book should be “savoured” for its candidness, truth-telling and the human values it stands for. “I commend the author for his spirit and honesty,” Mr. Ram said. “In fact, he told the publishers he would write the book only on the condition that not a single fact would be altered.” The book was released here by actor Kamal Haasan. It will be released in the United Kindgom, Sweden, Germany, the United States and Canada in the coming weeks. Samajwadi Party leaders Amar Singh and Jayapradha were present at the release.
