NEW DELHI: Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Anbumani Ramadoss on Friday said more funds would be made available for health-related research and setting up of medical schools in the 11th Five Year Plan.

Talking to reporters after formally re-designating the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) as the Department of Health Research, the Minister said the department would focus on enhancing medical research and capacity building and collaborating with national and international agencies.

It would be an autonomous entity and its funding would be increased by five-fold.

ICMR Director General Dr. N.K.Ganguly has been designated First Secretary of the Department of Health Research, which will focus on research in ageing, chronic diseases, cancer, environment and occupational health.
