Lovely Anand moves High Court

Special Correspondent

PATNA: The former Member of Parliament, Lovely Anand, on Friday challenged in the Patna High Court the life sentence awarded to her by a lower court in the G. Krishnaiah lynching case.

Her lawyer C.M. Jha, in a petition, said his client was not guilty and pleaded that the ruling be quashed. The lower court on Wednesday awarded life sentence to Ms. Anand after holding her and six others guilty in the case of lynching the former District Magistrate of Gopalganj by a mob leading the funeral procession of alleged gangster, Chottan Shukla, 13 years ago.

The court awarded death sentence to her husband and former MP, Anand Mohan, and two former legislators, Akhlaq Ahmed and Arun Kumar Singh.

It made it clear that it was not awarding her capital punishment because her husband was awarded death sentence and she was the mother of two children. Mr. Jha said the petition was likely to come up next week.
