Chennai: The 38th World bridge championship being played in Shanghai has reached a defining moment. The results of the last three rounds to be played on Saturday will decide the eight qualifiers for the three events, the Bermuda Bowl, Venice Cup and the Seniors Bowl. It is a close tussle in all three events. In the Bermuda Bowl, Japan (279) is in the eighth position. Breathing down Japan’s neck are South Africa (278.5), USA-2 (274), Argentina (272) and Poland (269). However, USA-2, one of the pre-tournament favourite, has two tough matches on Saturday against the Netherlands and Norway, both one match ahead of the Americans. In the Venice Cup, Egypt (286) is in the eighth position, closely followed by Netherlands (284), Denmark (283.5) and Indonesia (279). Chance for ChinaIn the Seniors Bowl, Brazil is the last one to be in the frame with a score of 294 VPs. China is on 291 and if it qualifies, the host may well have a quarterfinal representative in all the three events. Australia (286) is another team in with a chance to reach the quarterfinal of the Senior Bowl. The strong USA-2 team continues to struggle in the tenth position in the Bermuda Bowl. It lost to Pakistan 14-16 in the eighteenth round, the second loss to an Asian country after Wednesday’s loss to India. USA-1 played a disastrous match in the 17th round losing to the Italians by 62 International Match Points. It did not score a single IMP. The Victory Point score in favour of the Italians was 25-2. The top eight positions at the end of round 18: Bermuda Bowl: Italy (335), USA-1 (307), Netherlands (301.5), Australia (301), Norway (299), Sweden (286), China SMEG (284) and Japan (279). Venice Cup: USA-1 (344), Germany (328), China Global Times (322), France (314), Canada (295), USA-2 (290), England (290), and Egypt (286). Seniors Bowl: Canada (346), Indonesia (317), Italy (314), France (313), USA-2 (310), USA-1 (300), Poland (298) and Brazil (294).
