Prasanna holds Nitin; three share lead

Arvind Aaron

Chennai: In the big fight between two FIDE Masters, S. Nitin of Salem was impressive against Prasanna Rao of Mumbai but neither could wrest the initiative and take sole lead in the Canara Bank National sub-junior chess championship being played at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here on Friday.

After five rounds, second seed International Master B. Adhiban of Chennai joined Nitin and Prasanna in the three-way lead with 4.5 points.

Six rounds remain to be played.

Nitin enjoyed a four versus three pawn majority on the same side in a rook and minor piece ending but Prasanna held him to a fighting draw. Nitin reached a rook and knight versus rook ending without pawns, which resulted in a draw.

In a decisive fight between two Chennai players, former World Under-12 champion N. Srinath paid the price for a pawn blunder on the 23rd move. International Master Adhiban nursed that advantage packing power into his play with the black pieces for a place in the lead.

Top seed S.P. Sethuraman of Chennai made a comeback with a victory over Satyajit Kundu which featured a queen sacrifice. He is on four points and is among the many players tied for the fourth spot.

Earlier, medical examination for age was made after the third round and two over-aged players were removed from the pairing last night.

One of them was second seed Kanuri Tejaswi of Vijayawada who had scored three wins.
