NEW DELHI/BANGALORE: It appeared the end of the road for the 20-month Janata Dal (Secular)-Bharatiya Janata Party coalition government in Karnataka as a 90-minute meeting between the presidents of the two parties that continued till 10.40 p.m. on Friday failed to break new ground.
The former Prime Minister and JD(S) national president H.D. Deve Gowda told The Hindu on the phone that a final decision on the alliance would be taken in the forenoon on Saturday.
Details submitted
Mr. Gowda and BJP president Rajnath Singh met in New Delhi on Friday night and exchanged notes on the political developments in Karnataka.
It is understood that Mr. Gowda submitted to him several details of the relationship between two parties.
Subsequently, Mr. Singh sought time till Saturday noon to get back to Mr. Gowda.
The JD(S) Political Affairs Committee will meet again on Saturday after it gets a reply from the BJP.
The BJP Parliamentary Board, scheduled to meet on Saturday morning, is expected to take a formal decision to withdraw support to the government led by H.D. Kumaraswamy.
Steadfast
It seems Mr. Gowda is not prepared to transfer power — that is, allow the BJP to head the government for its remaining tenure — and Mr. Singh is not in a mood to wait indefinitely.
