MoU signed for import of dialysis equipment from United States

Bangalore: There is a ray of hope for those suffering from kidney failure and unable to bear the huge cost of dialysis, particularly the poor.

Union Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi said here on Friday that the Centre was importing dialysis equipment from the United States for providing low-cost services to kidney patients in the country.

Inaugurating the 18th annual conference of Indian Society of Organ Transplantation (ISOT) here, the Minister said a memorandum of understanding had been signed with the Association of American Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPIO) to supply dialysis equipment.

The Minister said he had assured the association that the Centre was ready to extend tax concessions for the equipment. He said the MoU envisaged the supply of equipment for patients in Tamil Nadu and Bihar. Mr. Ravi called upon corporate houses to take up healthcare programmes for the benefit of the people in rural areas, particularly the poor, or help those engaged in such services. The Minister felicitated K.V. Johny, nephrologist, and P. Mohan Rao, transplant surgeon, for their service both in India and abroad.
