NEW DELHI: Thirty-four students from schools across the country participated in the much-awaited “National Science Seminar 2007” at National Science Centre here on Friday.

Organised by the National Council of Science Museums (NCSM), the apex body of a nation-wide chain of 26 science museums and centres, the main objective of the seminar was to give budding scientists a chance to express their views on the contentious topic “Global Climate Change and its Impact”.

Speaking at the annual seminar here on Friday, NCSM Director General I. K. Mukherjee said the underlying objective behind the “National Science Seminar” was to inculcate scientific temper and create scientific awareness among budding scientists.

Pointing out that the earth’s climate had warmed and cooled over millions of years, Mr. Mukherjee said there was no doubt that the climate is growing warmer currently, indications of that change are all around usThe participating students sat for a written test before speaking on the topic for six minutes. Later, they were asked questions by a panel of four judges.

The seminar intends to provide a platform to students to share and exchange ideas with their fellow students from each State and Union Territory of the country and enrich their knowledge and also get the feeling of national integration.

While the seminar was inaugurated by Central Board for Secondary Education Chairman Ashok Ganguly, the valedictory session was attended by Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, who gave away prizes and scholarships to the winners. Subhojit Dasgupta from Jharkhand won the first prize of a monthly scholarship of Rs.1,000 for two years. The next nine winners received a scholarship of Rs.500 for the same duration. The annual event is being organised since 1982.
