Transport workers of CITU give up fast

MADURAI: Members of the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation Madurai Workers’ Association affiliated to the Centre of India Trade Unions, on Friday, withdrew its 36-hour fast here after the Government called the representatives for negotiation on a charter of their demands.

Its general secretary, V. Pitchai, said the fast that started at around 7 a.m. on Thursday was to go on till Friday 7 p.m. However, after the Government announced its willingness to conduct negotiations with the association, the protest was wound up nearly an hour in advance.

The negotiations would be held at Chennai on October 10.

“We want the Corporation to fix our (workers’) salary on the pattern of officers,” he said. Besides, the pension scheme which was run by a trust should be taken over by the Government.

The Government should also reinstate all the curtailed benefits, such as educational assistance and educational scholarship to the wards of workers, revive annual award for drivers for accident-free record and additional increment for drivers who maintained an accident-free record for 10 years.

More than hundred workers took part in the fast.
