MYSORE: Rare photographs of Mysore and Vijayanagar heritage will be on display at an exhibition, “Mysooru Mattu Vijanagarada Parampare”, at the Dasara Exhibition Grounds here from October 12.

Black and white and colour photographs collected from various sources, including the royal family of Mysore, will be exhibited for 10 days. The photographs of Mysore rulers, their family members, culture and tradition of Mysooru, and Dasara celebrations during the times of maharajas will be a treat to watch.

The photographs of Green Law, an officer during the British rule, who was an avid photographer, on the heritage of the Vijayanagar kingdom, will also be displayed. The exhibition is being organised by the Department of Archaeology and Heritage.

The photographs will be exhibited in seven stalls of Karanji Mansion, according to sources.

Heritage buildings will shine under sunlight and look bright under illumination as more than 11 of them are getting a whitewash. The Department of Public Works has been entrusted with the task of whitewashing the buildings around the Mysore Palace on the suggestion by the Department of Heritage.

Executive Engineer of the Public Works Department Thimmappa Gowda told The Hindu that the work would be completed by October 10. “All buildings will get an extra coat of whitewash, adhering to the stipulated norms,” he said.

The Deputy Commissioner’s office, which has been declared as a heritage monument, has also been included in the work. The whitewash work on the palace premises taken up by the Mysore Palace Board is nearing completion.

Mysore City Corporation Commissioner P. Manivannan said the pothole filling work and sprucing up of streets in the vicinity of the palace had begun.

Focus

“Our focus will be on keeping the city clean as a large number of tourists will visit the city for the celebrations. Our priorities should be on keeping the city tidy and maintaining hygiene,” he said.

Mr. Manivannan said the road repair work had been delayed because of rain. “Owing to shortage of time, only potholes would be covered and asphalt work will be taken up later,” he added.

Deputy Commissioner N.S. Channappa Gowda, who is the Special Officer for Dasara, said almost all heritage buildings would be illuminated. “Only select buildings were illuminated last year. But more buildings, may be all of them, will be covered this time in the grand illumination plan worked out by the festivities committee,” he added.

Illumination

While most of the buildings would be illuminated by the Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Corporation as KPTCL had released funds to it, those under the control of government would be illuminated by the respective departments, he said.
