Varsity plans grievance cell for students

R. Krishnamoorthy

TIRUCHI: Bharathidasan University has decided to start a grievance redressal cell to address the needs of the students promptly.

The Vice-Chancellor, M. Ponnavaikko, announced the decision on Saturday during the course of the Senate meeting after members expressed concern over the shortcomings in the examination system leading to delay in publication of results that affects students in the final year in particular.

Undergraduate students of affiliated colleges were stated to be at a disadvantage due to their inability to secure admissions in post-graduate courses in autonomous colleges that complete the process of admission in advance by a month by virtue of early completion of valuation and publication of results. Instances of inordinate delay in publication of results of a few well-performing students, whose answer copies went missing for months, were also highlighted.

The grievances of the students would be directly addressed by the cell that would be headed by a responsible and approachable official, Dr. Ponnavaikko said, replying to T. Arivudainambi, Lecturer in Physics, Rajah’s Serfoji Government College, Thanjavur. Advocating more alertness on the part of chief examiners to prevent such occurrences in future, the Vice-Chancellor assured the house that due action would be taken against those responsible for the gaffe and the university would look into the administrative requirements of the office of the Controller of Examinations for early completion of the valuation process.

S. Ramalingam, Syndicate Member, said that the number of examiners and valuation centres would be increased. In response to a resolution moved by Y. Chandra, Lecturer in History, Government College for Women, Kumbakonam, seeking another PG valuation centre at Thanjavur for speedy valuation of examination papers, A. Mutharasu, Syndicate Member, said the university would consider it for the April 2008 examinations.
