Change in mode of elections as per panel report approved BERHAMPUR: Berhampur University would again witness direct election to the posts of students’ union this year. Adhering to the directive of the state government in accordance to the Lyngdoh Commission report, the election for the students’ union of the university will held on Oct 15. During past two years the university authorities had abolished direct election for students’ union. In its place indirect election was being held. Students were electing class representatives who were later electing the office-bearers of the students’ union. The Post-graduate Council, syndicate and election committee of the university have already approved this change in mode of election of students’ union. Earlier, the university authorities were deciding the date of the students’ union election. It was getting delayed. During last academic year the students’ union election of the university was held in December. But this year the State Government has decided to conduct elections of students unions of all colleges and universities of the State on a single day to avoid students’ tension on campus. On Friday the election committee of the university held a meeting to chalk out the details of the election process and precautions needed to avoid tension on the campus. The university had to be closed sine die due to student unrest after the last students’ union election in December last year. No fanfareAround 1100 voters would elect the office-bearers of the Berhampur University. The recommendations of Lyngdoh Commission has, however, taken away much of the unwanted fanfare of the students’ union election. No posters and banners are being seen due to restrictions on election expenses. The university authorities say they would bar candidates who have any criminal record, even disciplinary action by university authorities against them. It has been decided to have extra police presence on the campus especially near the hostels to avoid mischief by miscreants during the students union election process.
