STUNNING WIN: Virginie Razzano rallied to beat Venus Williams and clinched the Japan Open.

TOKYO: France’s Virginie Razzano posted a stunning upset win victory over reigning Wimbledon champion Venus Williams to win the women’s singles title at the Japan Open tennis tournament here on Saturday.

The French fifth seed, fresh from winning her maiden career title at Guangzhou, China, last weekend, secured back-to-back wins after a 4-6, 7-6(7), 6-4 win over Venus.

“I’m very tired,” were the first words Razzano said after the match. “Because we played a lot in two weeks, we played in Seoul and Guangzhou, and here we played five more matches.”

“I’m very happy to win today, it’s my second title, it’s very good,” she said.

Gasquet to meet Ferrer

In the men’s category, Richard Gasquet outclassed Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic to set up a final against David Ferrer. The Frenchman, who took his fifth tour title at Mumbai last weekend beat Berdych 7-6(3), 6-3.

Top seed Ferrer, from Spain, overcame strong serving by the seventh seed Ivo Karlovic of Croatia to win 7-6(3), 6-3.

“It’s just one break,” Ferrer said of his match. “It’s difficult when he serves, because he is the best server on the ATP Tour. I think I was a bit lucky at the important moment.”

The results: Men (semifinals): David Ferrer bt Ivo Karlovic 7-6(3), 6-3; Richard Gasquet bt Tomas Berdych 7-6(3), 6-3.

Women (final): Virginie Razzano bt Venus Williams 4-6, 7-6(7), 6-4.
