PDP leader’s security vehicle set ablaze

Srinagar: A mob set ablaze a local politician’s security vehicle after it hit a pedestrian in Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir, the police said on Sunday. The security vehicle of zonal president of People’s Democratic Party Abdul Salam Tantray hit Manzoor Ahmad Malik, a resident of Pahalgam, at Lazbal in Anantnag district on Saturday night, they said.

Angry over the accident caused due to over-speeding, some set the vehicle on fire. Mr. Malik was admitted in Soura Medical Institute here, the police said. The vehicle was abandoned by its driver and another person soon after the mishap. A case was registered, the police said.

The PDP leader was at home when the incident took place.

Meanwhile, two more persons were injured in separate road accidents in the State on Sunday. Shabroza Akhter was hit by an auto near her house at Shamsipora while Habibullah Dar of Gonipora was injured when a truck hit him in Wadpora village of Handwara, the police said.

LeT militant killed

A self-styled district commander of Lashker-e-Taiba (LeT) and an army soldier were killed in a shootout in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ganderbal district on Sunday. Acting on specific information, the troops of 24 Rashtriya Rifles along with the police launched a joint operation at Phion- Paranwar in Kangan, 40 km from here, on the Srinagar-Leh National Highway, a police spokesman said. As the troops surrounded the house, the militants hiding there opened fire. In the ensuing gunfight, Abu Anees alias Fazal was killed.

An army jawan was also killed and two others injured in the shootout.

An AK assault rifle, one magazine and 30 bullets were recovered from the slain militant. — PTI
