Special Correspondent

PUDUCHERRY: Activists of the Communist Party of India (CPI) on Saturday launched padayatra in four areas in Puducherry to highlight issues such as “escalating cost of essential articles” and “entry of foreign direct investment in retail trade.” The campaign undertaken by four teams of party workers was flagged off by Puducherry CPI unit secretary N.Kalainathan and national council member of the party R.Viswanathan.

Holding party flags and placards, the activists distributed handbills during the door-to-door campaign in support of their demand for controlling the prices of life-saving drugs, onions, vegetables and food grains.

Demands such as monopoly procurement of food grains, remunerative prices for farmers’ produces, stringent measures against speculative market and strengthening of public distribution system were also highlighted during the campaign. Around 60 km was covered during the padayatra started from Rainbow Nagar, Karuvadikuppam, Uttirapalayam and Thirubhuvanai, Mr.Viswanathan said.
