Janata Dal (S) gains majority in Chitradurga CMC

Staff Correspondent

Independent extends support to the party

JD(S) set to come to power after over 15 years

The party had won 17 of the 35 seats in the CMC

Chitradurga: The week-long speculation about gaining majority in the Chitradurga City Municipal Council (CMC) appears to have ended following the support of an independent candidate to the Janata Dal (Secular).

Announcing this at a press conference here on Sunday, Janata Dal (Secular) leader S. K. Basavarajan said the independent, R.P. Praveen, had agreed to extend his support to the party.

With this, it is almost certain that the Janata Dal (Secular) would take over the reins of the CMC from the Congress which could not gain majority. The party is all set to come in power in the CMC after over 15 years in the CMC.

In the local body elections held for 35 wards of the city, the Janata Dal (Secular) won 17 seats, the Congress 15 while independents were victorious in three seats. .

Even after taking the votes of MLA H. Anjaneya and MLC B. T. Chennabasappa, to form the majority, the Janata Dal (Secular) needed the support of at least one independent. But the Congress required the support of all the three independents, even after getting votes of MLA G. H. Tippareddy and MP N. Y. Hanumantappa.

Mr. R. P. Praveen had fought as an independent against official Janata Dal (Secular) candidate Kadar Khan after he was denied Janata Dal (Secular) ticket. “ Indeed, we could not give party ticket to every aspirant due to some political compulsion, however, as Mr. Praveen has extended support to the Janata Dal (Secular), we still consider him as our party member,” said Mr. Basavarajan.

When no party failed to gain majority, rumours were thick about both political parties involving in horse-trading.

It was also said that Mr. Praveen had expressed his desire to be nominated to the post of vice-president as a quid-pro-quo. Denying the charges, Mr. Praveen said that he had supported the party without any pre-conditions.

Asked about the priorities after taking over CMC, Mr. Basavarajan said that the party would ensure hygiene in the city, roads and drainage system would be properly development and maintained.
