Acquire thorough knowledge, junior lawyers told

Staff Reporter

Honing their skills: Bar Council of India chairman S. Gopakumaran Nair inaugurating a professional development programme for junior lawyers in Kannur on Sunday.

KANNUR: Bar Council of India (BCI) chairman S. Gopakumaran Nair has called upon junior lawyers to acquire a thorough knowledge of law to be successful in their career.

Inaugurating a professional development programme for junior lawyers organised by the Bar Council of Kerala’s Junior Lawyers’ Welfare Committee here on Sunday, Mr. Nair said no successful lawyer was an instant product.

Every young lawyer should be ambitious as there were ample opportunities now, he said. Apart from knowing the subject (law), analytical and communicative skills should also be developed, he said.

They should also have a thorough grasp of the facts of the case as also a compassionate heart, Mr. Nair added. He called upon junior advocates to cultivate courtroom culture and learn persuasive and courteous language.

Talking on the role of the BCI in creating awareness on quality legal services among junior lawyers, he said the BCI had urged the National Judicial Academy to conduct a national seminar as part of a continuing education programme for lawyers.

Delivering the presidential address at the function, Director General of Prosecutions and Bar Council of Kerala (BCK) chairman P.G. Thampi said young lawyers were, at times, miserable in courtrooms as they lacked practical experience.

Reminding junior lawyers that there were no easy ways to success, Mr. Thampi said presenting of facts was very important. High Court Judge V. Ramkumar, BCK vice-chairman C. Gopalakrishnan Nair, Chairman of Junior Lawyers’ Welfare Committee T.S. Ajith and Bar Council members were present at the inaugural session.
