The decision taken by the Central Government to increase the ceiling for calculation of bonus from Rs.2,500 to Rs. 3,500 is laudable. It will bring more workers within the ambit of bonus. This has made possible for workers of private sector and public sector undertakings, whose basic pay and dearness allowance are less than Rs. 10,000, to become eligible for receiving bonus. With the prices of all essential commodities skyrocketing, the intrinsic value of the wages of labour have become paltry. Hundreds of thousands of workers will benefit from the decision. Addanki Srinivasa Rao Ongole No sports in schoolsSchoolchildren are oppressed with the curricula and are being forced by their teachers and parents to study more. In the process of completing homework and revising all subjects, they are forgetting outdoor games and sports. Though the teachers know that sporting activity gives students good health and keeps them fit, they are unable to allow students to play. One should know that sports and studies must go hand in hand for the overall development of students. K. Kameswara Rao Mortha, West Godavari Serious issueThe government proposes to show the valued answer scripts of the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examination to the candidates who wish to go through them from the next academic year. The Board of Intermediate Education has already introduced the system, which is going on without any hitch. But, it is a different case with the SSC examination. It is a sensitive examination, as it is the last step in school education. Hence, it is necessary to discuss with experienced staff in the department before taking the decision. Candidates not satisfied with the evaluation might go to court of law. Therefore, under any circumstances, the government should not allow revaluation of answer scripts. I. Subhash Samuel Ulavapadu Onion priceIt is highly deplorable to note that the soaring price of onion has badly affected the poor and the middleclass people. Many people, who can’t afford to buy vegetables prepare a soup with onion for their meal. Even if the Government proposes to give rice to the poor for Rs. 2 a kg, the poor are not in a position to buy onion by spending Rs. 16 to Rs. 21 a kg. It is learnt that the National Cooperative Marketing Federation, the Government agency authorised to export onion, has hiked the export price of onion by $50 a tonne to discourage its overseas sale and augment domestic supply. It is undoubtedly a welcome move and the Government will do well to take the necessary steps to reduce onion prices in open market. M. Blessing Moses Penumantra
