Chavan confabulates with party leaders

Special Correspondent

Bangalore: Union Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s office and in charge of Congress affairs in Karnataka, Prithviraj Chavan, who is on a two-day visit, started discussions with members of the Congress Legislature Party on the next course of action following the fall of the coalition Government and Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy requesting Governor Rameshwar Thakur to convene the legislature session on October 18.

Speaking to presspersons, Mr. Chavan said the discussions with MLAs and MLCs would go on till Monday evening and he was yet to ascertain their views on the decision to be taken whether to support the Kumaraswamy Government or not. He also said that the party had not taken any decision on whether the Assembly should be dissolved or kept in animated suspension.

Leaders such as N. Dharam Singh, M. Mallikarjun Kharge and H.K. Patil echoed the observations made by Mr. Chavan. Though, many Congress leaders, some of them on record, expressed their reservations on propping up the Janata Dal (S), they maintained that it was the prerogative of the high command to take a final decision on it.

However, the former Union Minister and Chickballapur MP, R.L. Jalappa, was emphatic that the Congress should not support the Kumaraswamy Government.
