Row over ‘sirimanu’ climbing ends

Correspondent

VIZIANAGARAM: The air of suspense over who will mount ‘sirimaanu’ (the ceremonial post) this year has been cleared on Sunday.

In the wake of a decision by hereditary trustees of Sri Pydimamba Devasthanam -- P. Ananda Gajapathi Raju and P. Ashok Gajapathi Raju – and also an approval received from Commissioner (endowments), Assistant Commissioner and Executive Officer of the temple, P.V. Subba Lakshmi, told a press conference on Sunday that it was decided to allow former chief priest of the temple, Bantupalli Bairagi Naidu, to mount the ceremonial post this year too.

Ms. Subba Lakshmi said that following retirement of Mr. Bairagi Naidu in June this year, there was a debate on his replacement.

But, considering sentiments of devotees it was decided to adhere to the age old tradition, she said and added that ‘tholellu’ would be celebrated on October 22 and ‘Siriminotsavam’ on October 23 (Tuesday).

Mr. Bairagi Naidu, who was present, said that with the blessings of Sri Pydimamba, he would be mounting the ‘sirimanu’ for the 26th time.
