Guwahati: A forum has demanded constitutional safeguards for Assamese Muslims as an indigenous community. It alleged that migrant Muslims of erstwhile East Bengal, East Pakistan (Present Bangladesh) have been getting all the benefits in the name of religious minorities, while the Assamese Muslims have been sidelined and discriminated against. The forum conveners— advocate Nekibur Zaman and Assamese theatre personality Sakir Hazarika — alleged that “overwhelming” patronage to Muslims of migrant origin has marginalised the Assamese Muslim community. They also alleged the political parties played vote-bank politics with migrant Muslims as they lived in pockets but sidelined the Assamese Muslims as their population was scattered all over the State. The forum claimed that of the estimated 82.41-lakh Muslim population in the State, the Assamese Muslims constituted about 35 lakh. They alleged that large-scale influx of migrant Muslims has posed a grave threat to indigenous communities.
