Social discrimination

After Khairlanji and Koholgaon, it is the turn of Wardha in Maharasthra. The assault on Vasanta Bagde and his mother, which has sent shock waves across the country, reflects the prejudice of the law-enforcement authorities against Dalits. One wonders how long such social discrimination will continue. After every incident, politicians issue routine statements condemning it and then forget it. It is time the governments, human rights bodies and social organisations came together and reaffirmed their commitment to deal with the issue collectively. Only then can we see a semblance of change in our casteist society.

R. Srinivasan,

Hyderabad

The continuing discrimination against Dalits in Maharashtra makes us wonder if we can really take pride in our booming economy and the growth of the service sector. What is the use of being a major IT destination when our villages continue to remain backward?

Rajeev Kumar,

Kochi
