Gandhi and the Nobel

The Nobel Peace Prize is meant for those who work for peace, not for the embodiment of peace itself. S.K. George, a long-time associate of Gandhi, writes: “… Gandhi has been reckoned among the disturbers of the peace, as one who stirred up the people; because of his relentless exposition of the injustices on which British Rule has been based in India, and his resolute fight against them. That is why he has been numbered with evil-doers and assigned his place in the prisoners’ cell. That is why the Nobel Peace Prize has not yet been awarded to him, nor will be so long as existing imperialism distorts men’s visions as to what real peace means. But Gandhi is working for no prize, he is not attempting any mere appeasement; but is aiming at a sure and lasting peace which can be based on Truth and Justice” (Gandhi’s Challenge to Christianity, Navajivan Publishing House, 1947, Page 17).

K. Venkataraman,

Chennai

We are glad that Gandhiji was awarded neither with the Nobel Peace Prize nor the Bharat Ratna. These awards are conferred on people in recognition of their excellence in their respective fields. Bapuji’s contribution to humanity remains truly unparalleled, unequalled and, above all, above the sphere of awards.

Seshagiri Row Karry,

San Jose, California

It is the foundation which would have gained in esteem by recognising the apostle of peace.

As for the disappointment among some that the Mahatma did not get the Bharat Ratna, instead of giving him the award posthumously, it would be better if the highest civilian award is named the Mahatma Gandhi award. It will be an honour to the Mahatma and the recipient.

P. Balakrishnan,

Mangalore
