Important roads to become one-way

CHENNAI: The traffic police propose to make important roads in some localities one-way, including those in Nungambakkam and Alwarpet, to facilitate a smooth flow of vehicles.

The proposals are likely to be implemented in a phased manner before the coming festival season since the number of vehicles and people to shopping areas increases during the period from mid-October to mid-January.

On Sunday, City Police Commissioner G.Nanchil Kumaran and Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Sunil Kumar briefed Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin on the proposals.

Chief Secretary L.K. Tripathi, Chennai Corporation Commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni and Mayor M. Subramanian participated in the meeting.

Talking to mediapersons after the meeting at the Secretariat, Mr. Kumaran said the police came up with the proposals after conducting studies on different stretches and examining the alternatives.

Heavily congested stretches in Alwarpet, T. Nagar and Ashok Nagar, Kathipara Junction and E.V.R. Salai figured in the discussion and one-way traffic systems proposed for them were discussed.

There was also a proposal to make Nungambakkam High Road one-way, he said, adding that the Chennai Corporation would be consulted wherever required.

Auto fares

Mr. Kumaran said the police would take severe action against drivers who collected excess fares. As the deadline to install electronic meters was over, action would be initiated against violators. He said action would be taken whenever public preferred a complaint about any violation by autorickshaw drivers.
