It was not an official stop

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Though the driver of the speeding Blueline bus that ran over seven pedestrians waiting at a bus stop at Badarpur here on Sunday came in for universal condemnation, a study by the Indian Foundation of Transport Research and Training has revealed other factors that may have played an equally important role in the accident.

According to the study, the Blueline bus was speeding at 50-60 km/hr which is over the prescribed speed-limit of 40 kmph. It was later revealed that the speed governor of the bus had been tampered with and the bus could have easily reached a speed of over 80 kmph.

The study has shown that the site of the accident did not harbour an official bus stop and the closest bus stop was at a distance of about 1 km from where the passengers were waiting. People usually waited for buses at this spot because of its proximity to the traffic signal, due to which buses were forced to slow down and halt, thereby making it easy for passengers to board the bus.

On Sunday, it was in an attempt to catch a slowing down the Delhi Transport Corporation bus that the crowd failed to observe the speeding Blueline bus that came hurtling their way.

Another fault highlighted by the study was that the DTC bus, which was mandated by court orders to ply on the extreme left lane, was instead plying on the middle lane.
