Police help sought to check plastic menace

Staff Reporter

Night patrolling officers told to step up vigil against litter-bugs

Thiruvananthapuram: A meeting of the city residents, the police and the civic officials on Sunday sought the help of the police for effectively curbing accumulation of plastic and garbage in public places.

The residents said some persons, including hotel owners, were carelessly dumping waste in the medical college police station area. Large plastic bags containing garbage were thrown out of vehicles at night, they said.

Plastic and garbage littering have become a public health concern at Kannanmoola, Poonthi Road area, Pattom and Kesavadasapuram. The residents requested night patrolling officers to step up vigil against the litter-bugs. The police said they would note down the vehicle numbers, trace the owners and request the Corporation to take punitive action against them.

Several hotels, shops and hawkers were parcelling food and other commodities in plastic bags of prohibited thickness. The Corporation should intensify its campaign against the plastic menace. Officials should inspect errant establishments and initiate legal action against the owners, the residents said.

They said that wayside eateries and fast food joints should be asked to close shop by 12 midnight. Recently, a white collar worker was robbed by an armed gang in front of a wayside eatery at Kesavadasapuram. A resident association office-bearer said that some persons were attempting to fill up a section of the Amayizhanjan canal near Anamugham for constructing houses. An armed gang was demanding money from those involved in the reclamation of wetlands for construction near Kumarapu ram. Residents said that private buses were endangering traffic safety by over speeding and often stopping suddenly in the middle of the road to pick passengers. They asked the police to discourage school van drivers from haphazardly parking their vehicles in front of the Arya Central School at Pattom.

Assistant Commissioner P. Reghunath, said that the law and order situation in the Fort police sub-division was under control. The police could detect nearly 40 chain snatching cases this year. Circle Inspector Suresh Kumar, Sub-Inspectors G. Ajith and J. K. Dinil and Maithri Suraksha convener Thekkummoodu Sumesh took part in the meeting.

44 arrested

The city police arrested 44 wanted men who had been evading arrest in a combing operation conducted on Saturday night. A press release issued by the City Police Commissioner’s office said that 67 persons were arrested the same night on the charge of drunken driving. Petty cases were booked against more than 300 persons on the charge of rash and negligent driving. Nearly 175 persons were booked on the charge of riding motorcycles without helmets and 52 on the charge of driving without strapping on seat belts. The combing operations will be intensified in the coming days.
