Kerala
Contrary to their counterparts in other States, auto-drivers in Kerala were very courteous and reasonable. But of late, they have started squeezing the passengers by charging over and above the meter reading. Some drivers even demand flat rates to go to a particular point. For a meter reading of Rs.21 often there is a demand of Rs.25 which is on the higher side. The government has fixed reasonable charges in consultation with the unions, which is reviewed from time to time. Anything above that will spoil their well-earned acclaim. G. Ramachandran Thiruvananthapuram Appoint lift operatorsThis has reference to the death of a person recently in a lift, which was not working properly at the Kerala State Housing Board building at Thampanoor. His life could have been saved if a board was exhibited near the lift mentioning ‘not working.’ Lift operators should be posted immediately wherever lift is in operation. The authorities concerned should ensure that the lifts fixed in buildings are in good condition and are operated by a lift operator. Karamana Mani Vanchiyoor
