OPERATION CLEAN-UP: Workers engaged by a private contractor team removing garbage in Kancheepuram.
KANCHEEPURAM: A Chennai-based company has taken over garbage removal along major thoroughfares in Kancheepuram from October 1.
Enquiries reveal that the Chennai-based company has been entrusted with the job of removing garbage from four `Raja Veedhis’, the Kamarajar Salai and parts of Gandhi Road and Vallalpachaiyappan Salai and transport it to the dumping yard at Thirukalimedu.
Two months ago, a resolution, seeking the Municipal Council’s consent to hand over garbage clearance to the successful bidder, was approved by the council.
The company has deployed a tractor-trailer and a team of workers including women to remove garbage from the major thoroughfares. However, the workers were seen removing garbage without wearing gloves.
Swift response
Meanwhile, the municipal sanitary workers sprang a surprise by emerging from nowhere to remove heaps of garbage near a temple.
It is said that following some passer-by’s information, a municipal lorry with four workers appeared on the scene and the garbage was removed within 10 minutes.
