Chennai: International Master and top seed S.P. Sethuraman of Chennai wrested sole lead after eight rounds in the Canara Bank National sub-junior chess championships being played here on Sunday. Sethuraman showed his class with aggressive rook moves on the king side mixed with some classy manoeuvres with his knight to tie up M.R. Lalith Babu of Andhra before defeating him with the black pieces in an English opening. Sethuraman leads the 150-player boys group with seven points. K. Priyadarshan of Madurai is in joint second place with 6.5 points. Priyadarshan sacrificed pawns and trapped the queen of higher rated IM norm holder Aditya Udeshi of Mumbai to win. Niji in joint leadA. Niji of Kerala joined leaders Shalmali Gagare (Mah) and Pon N. Krithikha (TN) with an impressive win over higher-rated Anusha (AP) in the girl’s section. Niji comes from Kozhikode and is trained by Kerala champion O.T. Anilkumar. All three leaders have 6.5 points from eight rounds. Three rounds are still to be played.
