Corrections and clarifications

  • A number of readers point out that in a report “Troops cut not possible: Kapoor” (October 7, 2007), the Chief of the Army Staff Gen. Deepak Kapoor, was incorrectly referred to as Lt. Gen Deepak Kapoor (in four instances). The caption of the accompanying photograph had the detail right.

  • A sentence in the eleventh paragraph of an article “‘Complacency can kill in a war zone’” (The Hindu-Magazine, October 7, 2007, page 5) was: “Regular duties included ensuring ammunition and equipment supplies, taking soldiers for medical check ups, training alongside them to build confidence, improving marksmanship, going on mounted and food patrols, training them on how to cordon areas and safeguard villages.” “Food patrol” should have been “foot patrol”.

  • Clue 20 Down in The Hindu Crossword 9037 was “The good man has a drink and plays on the guitar (6)”. It should have been “… (5)”.

  • What is “Ig” in the Ig Nobel Awards, mentioned in an AFP article “To laugh, perchance to think” (“Newscape” page, October 6, 2007)? The name is a play on the word “ignoble” and the name “Nobel” after Alfred Nobel. The official pronunciation used during the ceremony is “ig no-bell”.

  • In a report “Steyn seals victory for South Africa” (“Sport”, October 6, 2007), while the thirteenth paragraph said that Harris failed to add to his one wicket taken on Thursday, the fifteenth paragraph made it clear that Harris did take another wicket of Kamran Akmal on Friday. The Sports Desk clarifies that Paul Harris did add the wicket of Kamran Akmal to the one wicket he took on the previous day.

  • Ryan Sidebottom and Stuart Broad took only two wickets apiece. AFP incorrectly reported it as four wickets each in a report “England scores win [against Sri Lanka]” (“Sport”, October 6, 2007).

  • The date of birth of Mitchell Johnson is November 2, 1981, which makes him 25 years and 11 months. It was given as 24 years in a report “Aussies arrive in Hyderabad with their tails up” (“Sport”, October 4, 2007).

  • With reference to a report “Man United, Arsenal notch up wins” (“Sport”, October 4, 2007), the biggest victory of the day according to the margin is Rangers’ 3-0 win over Lyon. However, Sevilla scored the win with maximum goals 4-2 while beating Slavia Prague.
