RAMANATHAPURAM: The high prevalence of malaria in the Rameswaram island and several coastal villages of the district has caused concern among the public.
According to records of the Health Department, more than 2,200 persons have tested positive for malaria from January to September. The figure is just 827 till May. It is in the last four months that the number of malaria cases has risen significantly. In this period, more than 1,350 people tested positive for malaria. This is not an active period for malaria. Besides fishermen villages coming under the PHCs at Thangachimadam and Pamban, which are malaria-prone areas, cases have been largely reported in several villages around Kilakarai, Uchipuli and Mandapam.
“The Health Department officials have taken efforts to control the number of cases. The situation is not alarming. It is under control,” V. Uma Maheswari, Deputy Director, Health, Ramanathapuram, told The Hindu.
