Puducherry
Delectable spread: MLA M.A.S. Subramanian looking at the breads displayed in Puducherry. PUDUCHERRY: A giant thermocol Eiffel Tower that touched the ceiling welcomed visitors to a room stacked with loaves. The occasion was the celebration of the World Bread Day on Monday at the Mass Institute of Hotel Management, which was held at Hotel Mass. The students had made around 40 different kinds of bread to commemorate the day. They had also made long-lasting breads, using salt dough, in fancy shapes. Chief guest Joseph Lawrence, vice president, Society of Indian Bakers, gave a brief history of breads. He said that if everyone in the U.S. were to increase their consumption of bread by one slice a day the production of bread would increase by 20 million tonnes. The guest of honour, Venkatesh Kampala, managing director, Hotel Academy, Chennai, said the demand for catering graduates was on the rise. “There is a requirement of 45,000 people in the bakery field in Australia presently and this will increase.” MLA M.A.S. Subramanian said communication skill was a very important tool for catering graduates, as they mainly served the travel industry. K. Sridhar, principal of the institute, said they had 140 students of which over 60 per cent were from rural areas. “We ensure that all of them get placed in various hotels across the country,” he explained. The breads were later distributed to various orphanages.
