Lessons in disaster management

Special Correspondent

Wednesday is International Day for Natural Disaster Reduction.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The government has chalked out an awareness campaign for schoolchildren on disaster management using Edusat. The programme will be launched on Wednesday, International Day for Natural Disaster Reduction.

The campaign has been drafted by the Disaster Management Faculty of the Institute of Land and Disaster Management, in association with the Centre for Development of Imaging Technology (C-DIT) and IT@School.

The International Strategy for Disaster Reduction Secretariat of the United Nations (U.N.) has announced that Wednesday be observed as International Day for Natural Disaster Reduction.

The theme for this year is ‘Disaster risk reduction begins at schools.’ The campaign is aimed at mobilising governments, communities and individuals to ensure that disaster risk-reduction is fully integrated into school curricula in high-risk countries. It also focuses attention on the need to retrofit school buildings to withstand natural hazards.

The campaign in the State will focus on designing a comprehensive disaster awareness programme to teach schoolchildren how to protect themselves and minimise risks at home, school or any other place when a natural disaster strikes.

The awareness programme will be beamed to schools through the Edusat. Minister for Education M.A. Baby is scheduled to inaugurate the programme at the Gorky Bhavan on Wednesday.
