Programme highlights ITES prospects, problems

Staff Reporter

Kozhikode: A face-to-face programme between District Collector A. Jayathilak and the entrepreneurs of Akshaya e-literacy campaign here on Tuesday proved to be a new experience for the young information technology promoters.

The discussion focussed on the prospects and problems of the Information Technology Enabled Services (ITES). An enthusiastic entrepreneur wanted to know whether the government would an Akshaya e-centre to be set up at the Marad seaside village, near here, to impart free computer training to its residents.

The demand was sought considering the economic backwardness of the region where 14 persons were killed in communal violence during the past five years.

Most of the entrepreneurs said that they were willing to take up government-related works usually given to private agencies at reasonable rates. Dr. Jayathilak, Akshaya project chief coordinator, assured them that he would explore the possibilities in this regard. The programme suggested that Internet connection be provided at all Akshaya centres and moderate rates be charged for power consumption. The meeting also said that the Public Service Commission recognises e-Vidya courses conducted at the Akshaya centres.

Dr. Jayathilak said stern action would be taken against those illegally copying Akshaya training CDs. Assistant coordinator E.M. Gangadharan and campaign executive K.V. Sreenath spoke.
