Krishnagiri: NABARD has sanctioned a project under Farm Innovation Promotion Fund (FIPF) to TVS Educational Society, Hosur, to upgrade skills of small and marginal farmers through training and empowerment for the cultivation of exotic vegetables in low cost poly green houses.
This is the first project to be sanctioned under FIPF in the district, said the Assistant General Manager, NABARD, V. Thirumalai, here on Tuesday.
The total project outlay is Rs. 7.54 lakh of which grant assistance from NABARD is Rs. 6.02 lakh and balance contribution is from the NGO. The project period is one year.
Since Hosur is very near to Bangalore, it has good scope for marketing exotic vegetables as a number of Thai, Korean and Japanese restaurants are functioning in Bangalore.
Restaurants
A majority of these restaurants source vegetables from abroad. A salubrious climate, better soil conditions and proximity to an international airport in Bangalore have made Hosur one of the prime agriculture belts in the State.
Mr. Thirumalai said that farmers from Krishnagiri district could capture a slice of the market for exotic vegetables with cultivation of vegetables under green house conditions and proper training to farmers.
Components
The grant components include construction of two poly houses, provision of two sprayers and packing material, training and awareness creation, publication of booklets, pamphlets, distribution of seeds, organic inputs and travel expenses.
Salary of agriculturists and field assistants are also covered under the grant assistance, he added.
