PUDUCHERRY: The Pondicherry State Fishermen’s Association on Tuesday urged the government to take steps to include fishermen in the most backward tribals’ list. A resolution adopted by the executive committee of the association said the Maharashtra Government had categorised fishermen as most backward tribals. The committee also asked the Government to provide 10 per cent reservation for fishermen in the Union Territory in education and employment. The executive committee also urged the Government to hold elections for the fishermen cooperatives. The administration of the federation of fishermen cooperative societies should be handed over to the representatives of fishermen, it said. The association pleaded for reimbursement of the fees remitted by the medical and engineering college students belonging to the tsunami-hit areas in 2005-2006 without delay. The outfit called for disbursement of pension for fishermen who had crossed 50 years. It also asked the Government to ensure early perusal of the applications submitted by the fishermen seeking pension. Through another resolution, the association asked the Government to initiate steps immediately to construct a fish market at Thavalakuppam.
