MUMBAI: The Congress has retained the Nanded Waghala city municipal corporation and bagged 12 seats in by-elections in various municipal councils and corporations all over Maharashtra. Despite infighting in the Congress leading up to the elections on Sunday to the Nanded corporation, the party managed to do well. Nanded is the power base of State Industries Minister Ashok Chavan. The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) bagged ten seats in Nanded with the Shiv Sena winning nine, and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) three. There were in all 73 seats. The Congress lost out in the Pune municipal corporation where the NCP won all three seats. The NCP did well in Nagpur with two seats. In Mumbai too the Sena won the only ward that went in for a by poll. Official sources said that in the 25 seats where by-elections were held to various municipal corporations, the Congress won four, the NCP eight, BJP two and Sena two, including the only seat in Mumbai. The victory will boost the Sena in Mumbai and also ensure it holds on to its slim majority in the city municipal corporation. Komal Jamsandekar of the Sena defeated the Congress and other rivals to win comfortably. Komal is the wife of Shiv Sena corporator Kamlakar Jamsandekar from Saki Naka who was shot dead in March, a month after the civic polls in the city. Independents won seven seats in the corporation by-elections held in Mumbai, Pune, Solapur, Nagpur and Nashik.
