Plea to prepare list of jobs for the physically challenged

Staff Reporter

PUDUCHERRY: The Pondicherry Physically Handicapped Welfare Association on Tuesday urged the territorial administration to prepare a list of appropriate jobs to be earmarked for physically challenged people in Government departments in the Union Territory.

The association also demanded action against the officials who had failed to implement the provisions of the Persons with Disabilities (Equal Opportunities, Protection of Rights and Full Participation) Act, 1995.

Periodic revision

As per the Act, every government department had to identify posts for physically challenged persons.

It also mandated periodic revision of the list identified for reservation purpose.

Though most of the State Governments had adhered to the recommendations, the territorial administration had failed to implement the provisions of the Act, R. Narayanan, president of the association told reporters.

Flaying the administration for its “apathetic attitude” towards the disabled, he said the government was yet to implement the reservation norms as prescribed by the Act.

He also found fault with the Government for not introducing disabled-friendly facilities at public places and transports.

While the Act mandated every State Government to provide ramps in public buildings including government offices, hospitals, primary heath centres, bus stands and installation of auditory signals on public roads for the benefit of visually challenged persons, none of the provisions has been implemented, he charged.

Citing an example of the authorities’ “indifferent attitude towards the disabled,” he said it took almost five years for a polio-affected person to get a job in the Electricity Department.
